Jamie Kureluk, a native of Calgary, Alberta, and holder of numerous competitive scoring records, will be a Certified Personal Coach and Centre Manager at the newest GolfTEC Improvement Centre, which opens April 6th at 240 Midpark Way, Midnapore, Calgary.

A weekend-long open house for the general public will include a complimentary swing analysis with GolfTEC’s Vice President of Instruction, Andy Hilts, who is one of Golf Digest’s “Top-20 Teachers Under 40.” The centre will be open to new students and old friends on April 6-7 from 11am-8pm, and on April 8th from 11am-1pm for a tours, refreshments, and prizes.

Kureluk, who played for the University of British Columbia from 1996-99, competed professionally on the Canadian, Dakotas, Gateway and Pepsi Tours. He was named Player of the Year for 2009 on the PGA of Alberta circuit, where he won 10 times. He also holds four competitive course records, most notably a world-record 25 (11-under par) for 9 holes, shot during the 2010 Alberta Open, which he won.

A teaching professional since 2007, Kureluk is a Class A member of the PGA of Canada. He joined GolfTEC, the world leader in golf improvement, at the end of 2011, and is now bringing his skills and experience to the company’s newest state-of-the-art improvement centre in Canada.

While golf-related back injuries remain the leading health issue forcing golfers to put away their clubs and seek medical attention, the numbers of serious back problems appear to be on the decline, according to golfersadvice.com, a consumer golf instruction and news website.

“Part of the decline in back injuries may be directly related to people simply playing few rounds of golf per year,” said senior writer Joe Brown. “Many don’t have the time these days, nor can they afford the luxury of a $ 100 to $ 400 round of golf. Plus, businesses are cutting back on golf-related expenses for executives, and travelers who once spent a lot of money to golf in exotic locales are passing up golf destinations.”

Despite these factors, Brown also believes that increased fitness awareness, including how to properly warm up before playing golf, along with better understanding golf swing tips designed to reduce back-related issues, may also be contributing to the reduction of incapacitating back injuries.

According to Rod Edmondson, a sought-after certified fitness trainer in Southern California, more and more people are concerned about their backs these days, and are taking preemptive action. “A large number of my clients are golfers, and they want to know what they can do in the gym or at home to help strengthen their backs to guard against nagging injuries on the course. For the most part, my clients are very conscientious about doing the back exercises at home and practicing the golf swing tips I give them. Of course, keeping their weight down, while strengthening their core, are key factors to a healthy back.”

In 2009, there were more than 55,000 emergency room visits for golf-related injuries, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). While it’s difficult to know the exact percentage of back injuries within those numbers, the repetitive stress placed on the same muscles, tendons and joints can lead to a variety of injuries, including wrists, elbows, carpal tunnel syndrome, and of course, backs.

“I give my clients a number of golf-centric exercise for their backs,” says Edmondson, who operates a highly popular fitness boot camp called OC Fitness Boot Camp. “From special stretching exercises, to working out with medicine balls… and many other golf-related motions. As a result, I’m also seeing fewer clients coming in complaining of back injuries from playing golf.”

Brown, who has suffered with chronic back problems from playing golf for years, says that people are finally getting the message – keeping your back in good shape means keeping your core strong. “That’s certainly something I never thought about when I first started playing golf, and I’m paying the price now,” he said. “Today, we hear from many readers who spend as much time doing core-strengthening exercises, and practicing specialized golf swing tips, as they do playing golf.

One of Edmondson’s favorite core-strengthening exercises called the bicycle designed to be done home while watching TV. “Just lie on matt (or the carpet) and bring your knees up to your chest. Lift your shoulders off the floor, supporting your head with your hands. Straighten your left leg and at the same time rotate your upper body so your right elbow comes into contact with your right knee. Switch sides so the left elbow touches the right knee. Keep your movements slow and controlled with absolutely no jerking or pulling. I suggest 15 to 20 sets for advanced client. But you should only do these after a consulting with your doctor,” he added.

According to Brown, while other golf-related injuries have shown no decline, such as golfers elbow, the apparent decline of back injuries is good news for the sport, and websites like golfersadvice.com that routinely issue golf swing tips and back exercises to its readers.

“Let’s face it, in these economic times, the more people we can help keep healthy and playing golf… the better for the industry and our website,” he said. “Hopefully, even as the economy recovers, we’ll continue to see a decline in golf-related back injuries.”

Member of AGCP and has achieved Certification thru PCS or GCA testing, and/or has been building and fitting clubs for 5 or more years and/or appropriate schools or certification courses at PCS, Golfworks, Golfsmith, Mitchell, Dynacraft or attended Rifle or TT Black Gold Certification class. Member has a complete shop with hitting net, launch monitor, gauges for measuring shafts & heads and the ability to bend clubs to fit for loft and lie. Applicant’s equipment must include Launch monitor or swing analysis equipment similar to FlightScope, Trackman, Golf Achiever, Vector, Zelocity, or other recognized equipment for swing testing. Member has bending equipment for loft and lie on irons, appropriate shaft removal equipment, equipment to spine shafts and measure frequency of shafts. Member has the ability to swing weight fit or MOI fit sets of golf clubs and has the approved equipment for such matching techniques. Member also has video capability with video cameras and software and/or teaching capabilities. Written and/or Verbal testing is required for certification at this qualification level.

While many people remain active throughout the winter months, Seattle chiropractic center Belltown Spine and Wellness advises caution when embarking on springtime activities.

From outdoor pursuits to spring cleaning chores, the exuberance associated with spring weather often leads individuals to be somewhat careless in reacquainting themselves with activities not done in months. Many of these activities are easy to overlook as mindless chores or low impact athletics and can allow a lack of preparedness to introduce potentially damaging consequences.

The Seattle chiropractor has compiled a brief list of springtime activities to be wary of, as well as steps to take to avoid injury:

Spring Cleaning

We like the results of a cleaned and reorganized living space, but most of us would just as soon forget the work it takes. Cleaning refrigerators and other hard to reach areas can put us in strained, awkward positions. Also, moving furniture and storage devices can put a strain on back muscles. Being mindful of lifting properly with the legs and a straight back can avoid prolonged bouts of early spring soreness.

Cleaning Out Gutters

There are many reasons to take gutter maintenance seriously as a demanding physical activity. Not least of all is the fact that climbing a ladder is involved. Inspect the integrity of the ladder and place it on solid ground. Cleaning anything on a ladder is pretty much the definition of being in an awkward position, so make sure your movements are carefully planned while avoiding over-reaching. Take frequent breaks to allow recovery from straining in awkward positions. Some light stretching will help in between trips up the ladder.

Gardening

Spring gardening is fun and rejuvenating, but can also be problematic when it comes to back and neck pain. Many find gardening to be a relaxing way to reconnect to the soil but repetitive mention can be another danger. Be sure to take frequent breaks and don’t squat for too long. Working with gardening tools requires a good deal of twisting and lifting too, so paying attention to body positioning is very important. Warming up before gardening might sound silly but could save you a trip to the chiropractor.

Lawn Mowing

Push lawn mowers are heavy and demanding tools. It takes a fair amount of strength and technique to manipulate a mower around the yard. Tilting and pivoting, using the rear wheels is a key skill. Depending on the size and contour of the lawn, mowing can be an extremely aerobic activity. Take frequent breaks and remember to stay hydrated, even when the weather is not as warm as you would like.

Golf

Hitting the links full steam after a long winter off is a sure recipe for back pain. Even if your one of the hardcore nuts that slog around in the mud for a couple rounds in late January, the increased number of rounds inspired by good weather can make spring a difficult transition. Always remember to warm up thoroughly, once before leaving for the course, and once after you unpack your gear from the car. Start slow, being careful not to over-swing. Who knows, might even improve your game?
