Hit and Stop/Weight Forward Drill

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

The goal here is to pre-set impact (even to over-do it a bit) with the left knee flexed and forward to put in the secondary axis tilt. You then take an abbreviated backswing and try to stop the club almost immediately after impact by maintaining the flying wedge and extended arms. I could have done better on that in this video, but you can get the gist of it regardless.

Hitting Golf Irons Effectively – A Couple of Tips and a Drill to Help You Hit Those Irons Better

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Hitting golf irons effectively is often the difference between scoring low and scoring high. Those golfers and you know who you are that can not effectively hit your irons will have a tough time scoring low on your round. If you are using hybrids to mask your lack of skill with irons, your only delaying your improvement.

Bottom line is that you need to develop your whole game, irons included to improve your game enough to meet your goals. Keep in mind that it will take time and patience to improve and the best way to start is just that get started. Furthermore, a training aid will help you improve quicker than just doing it on your own.

To hit irons solidly, which is the key to distance control, you need to hit down and compress the ball between the ground and the face of the club. This produces backspin which, added to the club’s loft, makes the ball rise.

When hitting your irons, learn from your divots. A good iron player will hit the ball first and then hit the ground. Take a tee and stick it in the ground next to the golf ball and then hit the ball. Where is the divot? Make sure the divot is in front of the ball and not behind the ball.

We want to understand where your problems are so we know how to fix them and examining the divot is a great way to start.

Now if your hitting low flying iron shots, chances are the club head is flying away ahead of the hands during the swing. Now to fix this you can practice by hitting some shots with your five iron and bend your right knee, point your toe into the ground and hit the ball.

This drill will help you rotate on the ball and get loft on the ball. hitting golf irons effectively can be done when you put in the time to improve. I went from consistent 100 rounds to scoring in the low to mid 80′s just by working on my iron play.
